Male

Testes

male reproductive gland *sperm and male hormone (testosterone) are produced

Epididymis

• Male • mature sperm are stored here

Vas deferens

• Male • passageway that transports sperm up from the epididymis

Urethra

• Male & Female • passageway that removes urine (and semen located inside penis)

Seminal Vesicle

• Male • produce fluid in the semen & add nutrients • Sugary Fluid

Prostate

• Male • produce fluid in the semen & add nutrients • Chemical fluid

Cowper’s Gland

• Male • produce fluid in the semen & add nutrients

Seminiferous Tubules

• Male • coils inside the testes, produce the sperm

Ovaries

• Female • produce ovum (eggs)

Fallopian Tubes

• Female • Tube-Carries ova from ovaries to uterus

Uterus

• Female • Where the baby develops

Endometrium

• Female • lining of the uterus that is shed once a month unless there is a fertilized egg

Cervix

• Female • the opening of the uterus

Vagina

• Female • Birth Canal

Labia

• Female • Inner & Outer skin

Ectopic Pregnancy

• Where the embryo implants itself into the fallopian tube instead of the uterus • Very dangerous

Caesarean Section

• C-section • When a woman's abdomen and uterus are cut to get the baby out • Usually because of a breech or umbilical cord around the neck

Chlamydia

• Bacterial • the most commonly reported STD in the United States. • can infect both men and women and can cause serious, permanent damage to a woman's reproductive organs.

Gonorrhea

• Bacterial • can grow easily in the warm, moist areas of the reproductive tract in women and men. • can also grow in the mouth, throat, eyes, and anus

Genital Herpes

• Viral • one or more blisters on or around the genitals, rectum or mouth. The blisters break and leave painful sores that may take two to four weeks to heal.

Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)

• Viral • the most common viral STI • There are more than 40 HPV types that can infect the genital areas of males and females • Signs: Outbreaks of genital warts

Syphilis

• Bacterial • a firm, round, small, and painless sore on the genitals, anus, or mouth, or a rash on the body, especially on the palms of the hands or the soles of the feet.

AIDS

• Viral, not curable • Caused by untreated HIV • Can develop skin rashes & low immunity

Viral Infection

• Not curable • Can usually be treated, but not cured • Stays in your body forever

Bacterial Infection

• Curable with antibiotics

• If left untreated, can develop into PID (women), affect male reproductive system

Hormonally-Controlled Birth Control

• Stops the egg (ova) from being released from the ovary • Does NOT prevent STIs/STDs

Barrier Method

• Stops the sperm from entering the vagina • Helps to prevent disease

Abstinence

Not having any sex play with a partner

Birth Control Pill

a kind of medication that women can take daily to prevent pregnancy birth control pills are made of hormones-estrogen & progestin

Condoms

prevent pregnancy by collecting pre-cum and semen when a man ejaculates. This keeps sperm from entering the vagina. By covering the penis and keeping semen out of the vagina, anus, or mouth, condoms also reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infections.

Spermicide

contains chemicals that stop sperm from moving. Including: creams, film, foams, gels Should be used WITH a condom

Patch

worn on the skin of your buttocks, stomach, upper outer arm, or back once a week for three weeks in a row.

Morning After Pill

EMERGENCY contraceptive can be used up to five days (120 hours) after unprotected intercourse. Have to ask pharmacist to get it

Vasectomy

blocks vas deferens and keeps sperm out of the seminal fluid. The sperm are absorbed by the body instead of being ejaculated.

Tubal Ligation

Miscarriage

Spontaneous loss of pregnancy before the 20th week of gestation

Days 1-5 of Menstrual Cycle

Small amounts of blood leaves the body as the lining of the uterus (endometrium) is shed. Eggs begin to mature in the ovary.

Days 6-15 of Menstrual Cycle

The lining of the uterus repairs itself and once again prepares for a fertilized egg. This is known as ovulation.

Days 16-28 of Menstrual Cycle

The egg is fertilized by the male sperm cell and embeds itself in the wall of the uterus. If the egg is not fertilized, the blood vessels in the wall of the uterus shrink and break down. Then menstruation begins again.
