What is electrolysis?
Using electric energy to force a non-spontaneous redox reaction.
What is an electrolytic cell?
A cell where a non-spontaneous reaction occurs by adding electricity.
Which is spontaneous? (Galvanic vs Electrolytic(
Galvanic = spontaneous, electrolytic = non-spontaneous.
Where do redox reactions occur?
In both types:
Anode = oxidation
Cathode = reduction
Electrode polarity? (comparing the two)
Galvanic: anode −, cathode +
Electrolytic: anode +, cathode −
Direction of electron flow?
Always anode → cathode.
Direction of ion movement?
Anions → anode
Cations → cathode
(same in both types)
