Three types of cardinal places
Sagittal plane, frontal plane, transverse plane
Three axes
Anterior-Posterior Axis, Mediolateral Axis, Longitudinal Axis
Frontal Plane
Divides to Anterior and Posterior, Anterior-Posterior Axis, side to side movements
Sagittal Plane
Mediolateral Axis, Divides to medial and lateral, front to back movements
Transverse Plane
Longitudinal axis, divides to superior and inferior, twisting movements
Flexion
Sagittal plane, Bending movement that results in a downward angle of a joint by bringing bones together

Extension
Sagittal plane, Straightening movement that results in a upward angle of a joint by moving bones apart

Dorsiflexion
Sagittal plane, Flexion movement of ankle that results in top of foot moving toward body

Plantar Flexion
Sagittal plane, extension movement of ankle that results in foot moving away from body

Hyper
Beyond normal of any movement
Hypo
Less than normal of any movement
Abduction
Frontal plane, lateral movement away from midine

Adduction
Frontal plane, Medial movement toward midline

Radial deviation
Frontal plane, wrist abduction toward radial styloid(toward thumb)

Ulnar deviation
Frontal plane, wrist adduction toward ulnar styloid,(toward pinky)

Eversion
Frontal Plane, turning sole of foot outward(laterally), or standing with weight on inner side of foot

Inversion
Frontal plane, Turning sole of foot inward(medially), or standing with weight on outer edge of foot

Elevation
Frontal plane, superior movement of shoulder girdle, shrugging shoulders

Deperssion
Frontal plane, inferior movement of shoulder girdle, returning of shoulders to position from a shrug

Upward Rotation
Frontal plane, Lateral movement of inferior angle of scapula

Downward Rotation
Frontal plane, Medial movement of inferior angle of scapula

Lateral bending flexion
Frontal plane, Bending trunk or neck to the left or right

External lateral rotation
Transverse Plane movement, Rotary movement of anterior surface of a bone away from midline of a body

Internal Medial Rotation
Transverse Plane movement, rotary movement around longitudinal axis of a bone toward midline of body

Pronation
Transverse Plane movement, Internally rotating radius where it lies diagonally across ulna, results in palm down position of forearm

Supination
Externally rotating radius where it lies parallel to ulna resulting in palm up position of forearm

Protraction
Transverse plane, Forward movement of shoulder girdle away from spine, abduction of scapula

Retraction
Transverse plane, backward movement of shoulder girdle toward spine, adduction of scapula

Horizontal abduction
Transverse plane, Movement of humerus in toward midline

Horizontal adduction
Transverse plane, Movement of humerus away from midline

Circumduction/ Circumflexion
circular movement of a limb, combination of flexion, extension, abduction and adduction, multi plane movement
Ankle pronation
Combination of ankle dorsiflexion, subtalar eversion and forefoot abduction, natural movement of every step as foot hits, multi plane movement
Ankle supination
Combination of ankle plantar flexion, subtalar inversion, and forefoot adduction, natural movement of every step as foot leaves ground, multi plane movement
