Recombination Map
A representation of the linear order of genes along a chromosome, based on crossover frequency.
Map Units (mu)
Units of genetic distance equivalent to centiMorgans (cM), representing the recombination frequency.
Recombinant Frequency (RF)
The percentage of offspring that are recombinant, used to determine genetic distance between loci.
Syntenic
Two loci that are located on the same chromosome.
Non-syntenic
Two loci that are either far apart on the same chromosome or located on different chromosomes.
Three-point Cross
A genetic mapping method that allows determination of the order and distance between three linked genes in a single cross.
Crossover Hot Spots
Regions on chromosomes where the rate of recombination is higher than average.
Double Crossover
A recombination event involving two crossover events between two loci, which can produce gametes with parental genotypes.
Map-based Cloning
The process of isolating a specific fragment of DNA that encodes a novel gene by calculating recombination frequencies with mapped genes.
Centromere Position
The location on a chromosome where sister chromatids are joined and can affect the mapping of nearby loci.
