Linear Model of Communication (Berlo's Model)
A one-way communication model where a source encodes a message for a channel to a receiver who decodes the message.
Encodes
The process of converting information into a particular form for transmission.
Decodes
The process of converting an encoded message back into intelligible form.
Noise
Anything that interferes with the communication process.
Interactive Model of Communication
An interactive model where feedback is incorporated into the communication process between sender and receiver.
Types of Noise
Physical, semantic, and psychological factors that can introduce 'noise' into communication.
Fields of Experience
An individual's age, gender, mood, attitude, culture, and education which can affect communication.
Context
Situational, temporal, interpersonal, and organizational aspects that influence communication.
Transactional Model of Communication
A communication model involving multiple exchanges and cyclical interactions.
Jargon
Specialized or technical language used in a particular field or profession.
Active Listening
Concentrating fully on what someone is saying and showing that you are paying attention.
Respect for your Audience
Maintaining awareness of audience members and their backgrounds to communicate effectively.
