Known as the Father of Red Cross Movement.

Battle of Solferino

An 1859 conflict in Italy that inspired the creation of the Red Cross.

Memory of Solferino

An 1862 publication by Jean Henri Dunant that led to the development of modern International Humanitarian Law.

Committee of Geneva

Established in 1863; its members included Jean Henri Dunant, Doctor Louis Appia, Doctor Theodore Maunoir, Atty. Gustave Moynier, and General Guillaume-Henri Dufour.

International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)

The component that provides assistance and protection to victims of armed conflict and promotes international humanitarian law.

International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC)

The component that directs and coordinates international assistance to victims of natural disasters.

National Societies (NS)

Individual country organizations that provide assistance to victims of conflict and disaster, render health services, and cooperate with the ICRC and IFRC.

Red Crystal

An emblem adopted in 2005 that enjoys the same legal status as the Red Cross and Red Crescent.

Protective Use of Emblem

A visible sign of protection in armed conflict granted by the Geneva Conventions, appearing as large as possible.

Indicative Use of Emblem

Mainly used in peacetime to show a person or object is connected to the Movement; it must be small and bear additional information.

Republic Act 10530

The Red Cross and Other Emblems Act of 2013, which protects the emblems from imitation and misuse.

Republic Act 10072

The Philippine Red Cross Act of 2009, which recognizes the Philippine National Red Cross as an independent, autonomous, nongovernmental humanitarian organization.

International Humanitarian Law (IHL)

Also known as the Law of Armed Conflict, it restricts weapons and methods of warfare and protects those not participating in hostilities.

Four Geneva Conventions

The primary sources of International Humanitarian Law, established in 1864, 1899, 1929, and 1949.

Humanity

A fundamental principle to protect life and health, prevent and alleviate suffering, and promote mutual understanding and peace.

Impartiality

A fundamental principle to make no distinction as to nationality, race, religious beliefs, class, or political opinions, guided solely by needs.

Neutrality

A fundamental principle to not take sides in hostilities or engage in controversies of a political, racial, religious, or ideological nature.

Independence

A fundamental principle stating that the Movement is autonomous and National Societies must retain autonomy from their governments.

Voluntary Service

A fundamental principle that the Movement is a voluntary relief movement not prompted by desire for gain.

Unity

A fundamental principle that there can only be one Red Cross or Red Crescent Society in any one country, open to all.

Universality

A fundamental principle that all Societies across nations have equal status and share equal responsibilities in helping each other.
