What do Goblet Cells do?
They secrete mucus which traps dust/bacteria that enters the lungs
What does Cilia do?
The cilia then waft the mucus to the top of the trachea / back of the mouth, where it is swallowed or coughed up
What do Elastic Fibres do?
Elastic fibres recoil to their original shape, expel air, and prevent the lungs from bursting. They return the lungs to their original size
What does Smooth Muscle do?
They smooth muscle in the bronchioles constructs the airways by reducing the diameter of the bronchus
What does Cartilage do?
- Provides strength and support for the trachea and bronchi, keeping them open
- Prevents collapse during breathing in. As the chest volume increases, there will be a lower/negative pressure in the trachea
