What is a disease?
When the body doesn't function normally.
What is a pathogen?
Any microbe that causes disease.
What is a parasite?
Something that lives in or on the body and tries to take resources (food, etc.) from it.
What is a host?
A body that a parasite lives on.
What is an infectious disease?
A disease that can spread from one person to another, or can come from the environment.
What are other terms for an infectious disease?
It might be called "transmissible" or "communicable."
What is a non-infectious disease?
A disease that does not spread from other people or from the environment.
What are the things that can cause an infectious disease?
Microbes like viruses, bacteria, fungi, and protozoa. Animals (like worms) can cause infectious disease, but they aren't considered microbes.
What are the things that can cause a non-infectious disease?
A variety of factors: typically lifestyle, age, and genetics
When you start studying these diseases and causes, you'll probably want to turn on "Shuffle" mode so that the different diseases are spread out, and they're not all in the same place.

Fungus infection on foot. Itchy, flaky skin.

Virus.
Dengue fever: cause and symptoms?
Virus (carried by mosquitos). Fever and pain.
Anthrax: cause and symptoms?
Bacteria. Respiratory distress and high fever.
Chlamydia: cause and symptoms?
Bacteria. STD, genital symptoms.
Herpes: cause and symptoms?
Virus, STD. Painful rash and blisters (oral and genital infections)
HIV: cause and symptoms?
Virus. Causes AIDS (immune system dysfunction)
Influenza: cause and symptoms?
Virus. Influenza is a fancy name for the flu.
Measles: cause and symptoms?
Virus. Rash, high fever, flu-like symptoms.

Non-infectious disease (lifestyle, age, genetics.) Hardened arteries
Rubella: cause and symptoms?
Virus. Called "German measles." Skin rash.
Malaria: cause and symptoms?
Protozoa (carried by mosquitos). Fever, headache, body aches, fatigue.
What is "walking pneumonia," and what causes it?
Walking pneumonia is a less severe form of pneumonia, which is often caused by the Mycoplasma bacteria.
Sleeping sickness: cause and symptoms?
Protozoa. Also called "African trypanosomiasis" Trasmitted by tsetse fly, starts as flu-like symptoms, progresses to confusion, seizures, coma.

What are helminths?
They are parasitic worms, which are a type of animal.
What are three common types of helminths?
Flatworms (also known as tapeworms), and roundworms
Is ringworm a worm?
No! Ringworm is a fungus infection. It is NOT an actual worm.
What is pneumonia, and what causes it?
Pneumonia is inflammation of the lungs. It can be caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi.

Virus (HIV). Immune system dysfunction.
Mumps: cause and symptoms?
Virus. Swelling of salivary glands.
Do Mycoplasma or Mycobacteria cause Mycosis? Why or why not?
They do not! Don't let the TEAS trick you! Mycosis is a fungal infection. Mycobacteria and Mycoplasma are both names for bacteria, not fungus.
