Imperialism
A policy of extending a country's power and influence through colonization, military force, or other means.
Types of Imperialism
Includes colonies, protectorates, and spheres of influence.
Colony
A territory governed directly by a foreign power.
Protectorate
A territory that maintains its own government but is under the control of a foreign power.
Sphere of Influence
An area where a foreign power has exclusive rights to trade or invest.
Direct Management
A method of imperial control where the imperial power directly rules the territory.
Indirect Management
A method of imperial control where local rulers maintain their positions of authority under the guidance of imperial powers.
Assimilation
The process by which a person or a group's language and culture come to resemble those of another group.
Causes of Imperialism
Motives include competition for resources, technological advancements, social Darwinism, and paternalism.
David Livingstone
A Scottish missionary and explorer known for his explorations in Africa and advocacy against the slave trade.
Henry Stanley
An American journalist and explorer known for his exploration and mapping of Africa, especially in relation to the Congo.
Berlin Conference
The 1884-1885 conference where European powers divided African territories among themselves.
King Leopold II
The King of Belgium who claimed the Congo Free State, exploiting its resources and people.
Cecil Rhodes
A British imperialist who founded the DeBeers diamond company and advocated for British expansion in Africa.
Boer War
A conflict from 1899 to 1902 between British forces and Dutch settlers (Boers) in South Africa.
Exploitation of Colonies
Colonies were exploited for their resources, labor, and markets for goods.
Positive Effect of Colonization
Infrastructure development, introduction of western education and medicine.
Negative Effect of Colonization
Loss of sovereignty, cultural erasure, economic dependency.
Resistance to Imperialism
Natives often resisted through armed conflict, uprisings, and forming alliances; many attempts failed due to superior military technology and internal divisions.

The Emperor of Ethiopia known for defeating Italian forces at the Battle of Adwa and maintaining Ethiopian independence.
