New cards

What is a producer?

Plants, which photosynthesise to produce food

2
New cards

What is a consumer?

Animals that feed on other plants or animals

3
New cards

What is a decomposer?

Organisms that break down dead materials and help to recycle nutrients

4
New cards

What are 3 types of nutrition?

Autotrophic→plants→producer

Hetrotrophic→animals→consumer

Saprotrophic→bacteria, fungi→decomposers

5
New cards

What consists of the living organisms of an ecosystem?

Biotic components

6
New cards

What are the non-living (physical) components?

Abiotic components

7
New cards

OBJQ

Determine the terms "population," "community," "habitat," and "ecosystem."

Population→All the organisms of a particular species found in an ecosystem at a certain time.

Community→Populations of all species found in an ecosystem at a particular time.

Population→same species/community→different species

8
New cards

Define the stage of life and environment.

Cell→tissue→organ→organ system→organisms→population→community→ecosystem

OBJQ + P.A

Explain the quadrat and use

A quadrat is used to sample plants and animals that don’t move much. It comes in 0.5 or 1 meter(s). It is thrown randomly to avoid biased results.

OBJQ

Define biodiversity and its impact on the ecosystem.

The amount of variation shown by species in an ecosystem. It has a positive impact on an ecosystem because an ecosystem with high biodiversity is often more stable than one with low biodiversity.

Measure→species richness (numbers)

Evenness of number (abundance)

11
New cards

What is a transect, and explain the line transect?

Use of the sample distribution of organisms in a straight line across the habitat. The length of the string or plastic line is marked at regular intervals and stretched across the habitat. Plants' and animals' touching mark points are recorded

12
New cards

What is a belt transect?

Quadrats are placed at regular sample points, and the abundance of organisms within each is measured.

13
New cards

What is the use of pitfall traps?

Used to sample arthropods moving over the soil surface.

14
New cards

What is the use of a pooter?

Used to collect specimens of insects and other arthropods.
