Target Behavior
An isolated behavior that is the specific focus of a behavior change program (e.g., beginning to exercise, quitting smoking, starting to floss, wearing a seatbelt, reducing binge drinking, eating more fruits and veggies).
Primary step in beginning a behavior change
Identify a Target Behavior.
Self-Efficacy
The belief in one’s ability to take action and perform a specific task.
Locus of Control
The figurative “place” a person designates as the source of responsibility for events in his/her life.
Internal Locus of Control
Belief that it is your responsibility and you practice personal control to improve behaviors that affect your life in a positive way.
External Locus of Control
Belief that external factors control your life and you have no say or responsibility in outcomes.
Transtheoretical Model of Change
A stage-based model driven by experience and willingness to shift values, beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors through reflective practices.
Pre-contemplation
Not thinking about change; unaware of risks; there is no problem.
Contemplation
Aware of a problem and its benefits/costs; considering taking action but not yet acting.
Preparation
Plan to take action within about a month; develop a detailed plan, visualize/self-talk, and begin trying.
Action
Outward signs of modifying behavior and environment; monitor self; implement changes; seek support.
Maintenance
Have maintained new healthier behavior for at least 6 months; continue positive strategies; relapse can occur but is not a stage.
Relapse
Not a stage of the model, but a potential return to old behavior that can occur during change.
Termination
Complete adherence to the new behavior with no temptation to lapse; old behavior effectively eliminated.
Stage progression strategies
Raising consciousness, examining barriers, boosting self-efficacy, and leveraging social support to move through Pre-contemplation, Contemplation, Preparation, Action, and Maintenance.
