Logic Definitions for logical reasoning

Aristotelian Logic

The formal logic developed by Aristotle ( Aristotle’s method of deductive logic, characterized by the syllogism)

Logical Statement

A declarative statement that is either true or false but not both.

Negation

The opposite of a statement. Uses ~ to show negation.

Conjecture

An unproven statement that is based on observations.

Inductive Reasoning

A process that includes looking for a pattern and making conjectures. You can’t prove it.

Deductive Reasoning

A process that uses facts,definitions,accepted properties, and laws of logic to form a logical argument. It can be proven.

Counter Example

A specific case that shows a conjectures is false.

Compound Statement

2 or more statements joined by the word “and” or “or”.

Conjunction

A relation among the components of a compound statement, usually expressed by the symbol ^ meaning AND.
