Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen
A German physicist who discovered X-rays on November 8, 1895, while experimenting with cathode rays in a Crooke's tube, receiving the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1901.
Crooke's Tube
A partially evacuated glass tube containing two electrodes (a cathode and an anode) used by Roentgen when discovering X-rays.
Barium Platinocyanide
A chemical compound painted on cardboard that emitted a faint glow (fluoresced) when exposed to X-rays in Roentgen's laboratory.
Heterogeneous Radiation
A characteristic of X-rays meaning they are produced over a wide range of energies and wavelengths.
Speed of X-rays
The rate at which X-rays travel through space, equal to the speed of light at 186,000miles per second.
Ionization
The process by which X-rays displace electrons from atomic orbits in matter, producing chemical and biological changes.
First X-ray Image
A historic radiographic image taken of Roentgen's wife's hand in 1895, which required an exposure time of 15minutes.
Radiologic Technologist
A fully trained professional credentialed as RT(R) who has completed an accredited program, passed ARRT boards, and applies art and science to make diagnostic exposure decisions.
Technician
A nonmedically qualified person trained to assemble, repair, or follow a fixed single-way routine procedure for a device or product.
ARRT Certification
A one-time qualification awarded after an individual satisfies all eligibility requirements and passes the board examination.
ARRT Registration
The annual renewal process of an ARRT certificate's validity, requiring a fee of approximately 45dollars and verification of continuing education every two years.
Licensing
State-administered authority granted under state law permitting an individual to practice radiologic technology within that specific state.
Continuing Education (CE)
A mandatory requirement for certified technologist maintenance requiring 24CE credits every 2years, starting on the birth month.
Fluoroscope
A device improved by Thomas Edison in 1896 that converts X-ray shadows into visible light to permit real-time dynamic viewing.
William Coolidge
The inventor who introduced the heated cathode X-ray tube in 1913.
Marie Curie
The scientist who invented a mobile X-ray unit in 1914 and trained women to operate it during World War I.
Tomography
An imaging technique introduced by Dr. Alessandro Vallebona in the 1930s to represent a single body slice on film; derived from Greek tomos (slice) and graphia (describing).
Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR)
A physical phenomenon independently discovered in 1946 by American physicists Edward Purcell and Felix Bloch.
Radiation
The process of transferring energy in living tissue, which is invisible and present only when the X-ray tube is actively energized.
Radiation Monitoring Badge
A personnel monitoring device issued to radiation workers who may accumulate 1/10 of the recommended occupational dose limit (50mSv), worn at collar level outside a lead apron.
Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) Dosimeter
A radiation monitoring badge utilizing a thin layer of aluminum oxide processed by laser light, sensitive down to 1mrem.
Cardinal Principles of Radiation Protection
The three primary principles to minimize radiation exposure: time, distance, and shielding.
Collimation
The restriction of the primary X-ray beam to the smallest appropriate field size, identified as the primary method to protect the patient from unnecessary exposure.
ALARA
An acronym for 'As Low As Reasonably Achievable,' guiding radiation protection practice to minimize dose while optimizing image quality.
