Data
Something to be collected, interpreted, and analyzed.
Raw Data
Unorganized and listed randomly; collected immediately after research.
Organized Data
Data listed in proper order, easy to look at, and presentable.
Quantitative Data
Numerical data that can be measured.
Qualitative Data
Describes characteristics such as color, shape, and appearance.
Experimental Error
A mistake or error in the experiment.
Independent Variable (IV)
The variable that is changed or controlled in an experiment.
Dependent Variable (DV)
The variable that is measured in an experiment.
Tables
A structured arrangement of data typically including independent and dependent variables.
Graphs
Visual representation of data showcasing relationships between variables.
DRY MIX
An acronym used to remember the placement of variables in graphs (Dependent, Responding, Y-axis and Manipulated, Independent, X-axis).
Conclusions
Statements summarizing the results of an experiment to validate the hypothesis.
Hypothesis
An initial statement or prediction that can be tested in an experiment.
Trend
A general direction in which something is developing or changing.
Evidence
Data collected from a study that supports a conclusion.
Average
The result of adding several quantities together and dividing by the number of quantities.
Axes (X and Y)
The horizontal and vertical lines used in graphs to plot data.
Measurable Units
Standardized quantities used to measure variables in experiments.
Visualization
The process of creating graphical representations of data.
Summarize
To give a brief statement of the main points.
Analyze
Examine in detail the structure of something.
Collecting Data
The process of gathering information for analysis.
Interpreting Data
The act of explaining the meaning or significance of data.
Charles' Law
A gas law that describes how gases tend to expand when heated.
Graph Scale
The increments on a graph that indicate the value of the axes.
Variables
Elements or conditions that can be changed in an experiment.
