IP addressing
A numerical label assigned to each device connected to a computer network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication. It identifies the host and specifies its location in the network.
Subnets
Logical subdivisions of an IP network created to improve network performance, security, and address management by grouping related devices together.
DNS (Domain Name System)
A decentralized naming system that translates human-readable domain names (e.g., example.com) into numerical IP addresses required to locate computer services and devices.
DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol)
A network management protocol used to automatically assign IP addresses and other network communication parameters to devices joining a network.
TCP vs UDP
TCP is a connection-oriented protocol ensuring reliable, ordered, and error-checked delivery of data. UDP is a connectionless protocol prioritizing speed over reliability without guaranteeing delivery or ordering.
Routing
The process of selecting pathways across one or more networks to forward IP packets from a source host to a destination host.
Switching
The process of receiving, processing, and forwarding data packets at Layer 2 to specific destination devices within the same local area network (LAN) using MAC addresses.
VLANs (Virtual Local Area Networks)
Custom logical networks created by grouping physical ports/devices on switches, isolating traffic regardless of physical location.
NAT (Network Address Translation)
A technique that maps private, non-routable IP addresses to a public IP address (or set of addresses) so internal network devices can access external networks like the Internet.
BGP (Border Gateway Protocol)
The standardized exterior gateway routing protocol designed to exchange routing and reachability information among Autonomous Systems (AS) on the Internet.
Latency
The time delay between sending a request for data and receiving the response, typically measured in milliseconds (ms).
Bandwidth
The maximum rate of data transfer across a given network path, typically measured in megabits per second (Mbps) or gigabits per second (Gbps).
Packet loss
The failure of one or more transmitted data packets to reach their intended destination, often caused by network congestion, faulty hardware, or signal degradation.
Redundancy (Networking)
The inclusion of extra network components, pathways, or devices to ensure continuous service availability in the event of a component failure.
Colocation
A data center facility service in which a business rents physical space, power, cooling, and security to house its own servers and networking hardware.
Servers
High-performance computer hardware dedicated to running software applications, managing network resources, and processing requests from client devices.
Storage (Data Center)
Dedicated systems (such as SANs, NAS, or SSD/HDD arrays) designed to retain, organize, and quickly serve digital data for enterprise applications and databases.
Power (Data Center Infrastructure)
The continuous electrical system—including utility feeds, Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS), Power Distribution Units (PDUs), and backup diesel generators—that keeps facility equipment operational.
Cooling (Data Center)
Environmental management systems (like CRAC/CRAH units and hot/cold aisle containment) designed to remove heat generated by operating servers and prevent thermal hardware failure.
Rack space
The physical real estate inside a standardized server rack enclosure, measured in Rack Units (U), where 1U equals 1.75 inches of vertical height.
Network connectivity
The overall capability of systems and data centers to establish communication links with internal servers, clients, and external network service providers.
Availability / High Availability
A design framework and operational metric ensuring system uptime through redundant infrastructure, power, network links, and automated failover systems.
Data-center locations
Strategic physical geographic sites selected based on proximity to user bases, low risk of natural disasters, favorable climate, stable power grids, and dense fiber connectivity.
IP transit
A paid commercial service where a network provider allows customer traffic to cross its network to reach the rest of the global Internet routing table.
Internet connectivity
The broad capability of an individual, network, or data center facility to link to global Internet infrastructure.
Transport (Telecommunications)
Private point-to-point Layer 1 or Layer 2 telecommunication links (like Ethernet private lines or wavelengths) used to move raw data between data centers without routing through the public Internet.
Dark fiber
Unused optical fiber cables installed underground or overhead that are leased or purchased by clients who supply their own optical equipment to light the fiber.
Fiber (Fiber Optics)
A transmission medium that uses thin strands of glass or plastic to transmit data as pulses of light over long distances with low loss and high bandwidth.
Ethernet
The standard wired family of computer networking technologies for Local Area Networks (LANs) defining physical media, cabling, frame formats, and protocol rules.
Cross-connect
A physical point-to-point cable connection within a data center that links two distinct customers, carriers, or cabinets directly together.
Carrier (Telecommunications)
A telecommunications enterprise authorized to own, operate, and lease physical telecommunication transport infrastructure and networking capacity.
ISP (Internet Service Provider)
An organization that provides individuals, businesses, and enterprises access to the Internet along with related services like routing and domain registration.
CDN (Content Delivery Network)
A geographically distributed network of proxy servers and data centers that caches web content closer to end-users to optimize speed and availability.
Internet Exchange / IX
A physical infrastructure location where Internet Service Providers (ISPs), CDNs, and network operators meet to exchange traffic directly via peering agreements without paying third-party transit fees.
Backbone (Network Backbone)
The high-capacity primary network infrastructure pathways that connect disparate local, regional, and international networks across continents and oceans.
Edge network
Network infrastructure situated physically close to end-users or devices, designed to process requests locally to lower latency and minimize core data center load.
