Delta
An area where sediment from a river deposits into a lake/ocean.
Coastline
An area where a large body of water erodes the land.
Deposition
The dropping of sediment on Earth's surface.
CONSTRUCTIVE Process
Discharge Rate
The speed in which water and any suspended sediment moves through a stream.
Erosion
When Earth's surface is carried away or moved by wind, water, or ice.
DESTRUCTIVE Process.
Floodplain
The low lying area of rich topsoil around a stream or river that typically floods. The river moves and winds through this area.
Flooding
When a river or stream overflows its banks.
Gradient
The incline or slope to a stream or river.
Mass Wasting
Large amounts of soil, sand, and rock moves down a slope due to gravity. (creep, landslide, rockfall, mudslide)
Topography
Earth's surface features and changes in elevation by contour lines connecting areas of equal elevation.
Weathering
Breaking down of rocks, soil, and minerals.
(Break it into smaller pieces... NOT moving)
Steeper ground slope
Faster moving water & higher discharge rate
Constructive Geological Process
New land features or crust are deposited / created.
Destructive Geological Process
Old land features or crust are eroded away / destroyed.
Cut Bank
The outside of a meander where erosion occurs
Point Bar
The inside of a meander where deposition occurs
Creep
When a hillside slowly moves down slope, a type of mass wasting
Flat ground
Slower moving water & lower discharge rate
When the water slows down...
that is when...
DEPOSITION happens, dropping off sediment.
When water speeds up...
that is when...
MORE EROSION happens, carrying sediment down stream.
