Flashcard 1
Q: Know that metal carbonates react with an acid to produce carbon dioxide.
A: Metal carbonates react with acids to produce a salt, water and carbon dioxide.
General equation:
Metal carbonate + Acid → Salt + Water + Carbon dioxide
Example:
Calcium carbonate + Hydrochloric acid → Calcium chloride + Water + Carbon dioxide
Word equation:
Calcium carbonate + Hydrochloric acid → Calcium chloride + Water + Carbon dioxide
The carbon dioxide produced can be tested using limewater.
Flashcard 2
Q: Know the tests and results for oxygen, hydrogen and carbon dioxide.
A:
Oxygen
Test: Glowing splint
Result: Glowing splint relights.
Hydrogen
Test: Lit splint
Result: Squeaky pop.
Carbon dioxide
Test: Bubble gas through limewater.
Result: Limewater turns cloudy/milky.
Flashcard 3
Q: Know that there is a change in mass when an open system produces a gas.
A: In an open system, gases can escape into the surroundings.
If a reaction produces a gas:
The mass measured decreases.
This is because gas particles leave the container.
The total mass is actually still conserved if the escaped gas is included.
Example:
Magnesium carbonate + acid produces carbon dioxide gas. The measured mass decreases because the gas escapes.
