2+ symptoms must exist for 1+ month

1. Delusions 2. Hallucinations 3. Disorganised speech 4.Grossly disorganised or catatonic behaviour 5. Negative symptoms At least 1 symptom must be (1),

positive symptoms

change in behaviour - delusions eg paranoia, reference random objects etc, thought insertion, broadcast, withdrawal, control. auditory hallucinations, bizarre behaviour, disorganised speech (word salad)

negative symptoms

withdrawn - alogia (poverty of speech content), imparts social interaction, Apathy, anhedonia

schizophrenia and suicidal behavior

Risk higher for males in social isolation , Suicide normally committed early in the illness, Not normally due to command hallucinations. Approx 10% of patients die via suicide, 20-40% attempt, 60-80% think about it
