There are many different levels of judges but their base function is the same and that's to apply the law in a fair and unbiased way and make decisions in respect of disputes. The head of judiciary is the Lady Chief Justice the Right Honourable the Baroness Carr of Walton on the Hill

The Judiciary is divided into superior and Inferior Judges. Superior Judges are those who sit in High Court and above So Compromise of the judges of Supreme Court, the lord lady Justices of Appeal and High Court Judges.

What’s the 3rd Paragraph for “Explain the role of Judges in superior courts” (High court judges- their role)

High court judges, also known as cuisine judges sit in High court, main role is to sit alone and hear first instant cases in 1 of the 3 divisions of the High Court; KBD, Chancery division and Family division. They’ll have to listen to the facts and evidence presented and reach a decision. If find D liable, they’ll decide on appropriate remedy. HCJ from KBD can also sit in Crown Court with jury to hear most serious criminal cases and pass sentence.

HCJ can hear appeals from civil cases started in County Court, Judges from KBD can hear criminal appeals from Mag court by way of case stated. These appeals are on point of law. When sitting to hear appeal there’ll be a panel of 2 HCJ.

HCJ can hear more speciality such as judicial review in relation to challenges regarding individuals who have standing (locus standi) who feel they’ve been directly affected by the DL and seek to challenge its legality. Judge will interpret the wording of the enabling act to decide whether the law was made Ultra Vires (beyond powers granted by parl), if leg declared to be UV, it’ll be declared void.

What’s the 6th Paragraph for “Explain the role of Judges in superior courts” (Lord justices of appeal, 7000, 2nd appeal)

Lord Justices of appeal sit both divisions (civil and criminal) of the CoA and hear over 7000 cases each year. Must sit in uneven panel numbers (3/5). Only hear appeal cases on a point of law, civil division hears appeals from High court and criminal division hears appeals from Crown court. 2nd or further appeals from county court will also be heard. Decisions made by Lord Justices of appeal are binding on all lower courts.

Justices of supreme court sit in the Supreme Court and hear 100 cases each year; all appeals based on a point of law. They hear appeals from all UK courts from England, Wales and Northern Island and can be on either criminal or civil ok complex or arguable points of law of constitutional or public importance. Must sit in uneven panel numbers (3/5), December 2016 panel of 11 sat to hear brexit appeal as so important. Justices of SC listen to case and retire, often for several months, to consider the case and write their judgement. Any decisions they make on point of law are binding on all lower courts.
