Text (Etymology)
Derived from the Latin expression texere ('to build, weave') and textus ('way of weaving, woven thing, structure').
Text (Fiorin's Definition)
An organized whole of sense made up of solidary (interdependent) parts, where the meaning of one part depends on the meaning of the others.
Multimodal Texts
Texts composed of different resources that combine images, written words, and sometimes auditory elements such as onomatopoeias.
Textual Types (Tipos Textuais)
Fixed and stable structural patterns characterized by specific traits that repeat across different texts, categorized strictly into five types.
Narrative Type (Narração)
A textual type defined by characters engaging in action within a specific time and space, typically narrated using past tense verbs.
Descriptive Type (Descrição)
A textual type with no plot action that details traits of a person, place, object, or state using linking verbs and adjectival details.
Argumentative Type (Dissertação / Argumentação)
A textual type focused on defending a thesis or point of view by presenting supporting arguments to convince the reader.
Expository Type (Exposição)
A textual type that presents objective information to clarify a specific topic for the reader, without attempting to persuade or tell a story.
Injunctive Type (Injunção)
A textual type intended to provide step-by-step instructions for completing tasks, heavily using imperative mode verbs.
Textual Genres (Gêneros Textuais)
Flexible and unlimited forms of text created for specific social interactions that evolve according to society's communicative needs.
Reportage (Reportagem)
A textual genre aimed at informing the reader about an event using clear, objective, and impartial language, usually featuring a headline, lead, and body.
Charge (Editorial Cartoon)
A multimodal genre that uses imagery—often in a single panel—and brief text to deliver social or political critique using humor or irony.
Comic Strip (Tirinha)
A multimodal genre consisting of a short sequence of panels depicting brief events, reflections, or humorous situations.
Novel (Romance)
A long narrative genre involving characters whose actions over time and space transform the initial situation.
Short Story (Conto)
A brief narrative genre featuring agile plot progression and limited detail regarding characters and setting.
Chronicle (Crônica)
A light, often humorous textual genre reflecting on daily urban life and routine social episodes.
Textual Comprehension
The reading skill focused on identifying explicitly stated facts, vocabulary, structural elements, and cohesion markers in a text.
Textual Inference
The logical process of uncovering unstated, implicit information by combining text clues with the reader's prior knowledge.
Presuppositions (Pressupostos)
Implicit meanings that logically and necessarily derive from specific words or grammatical expressions present in the sentence.
Subentendidos (Implied Meaning / Insinuations)
Unstated suggestions or insinuations without explicit linguistic markers, relying entirely on context to be understood.
