CONAP
Consejo Nacional de Áreas Protegidas (National Council of Protected Areas). Its mission is to promote the conservation of protected areas and biodiversity, contributing to sustainable development.
SIGAP
Sistema Guatemalteco de Áreas Protegidas (Guatemalan System of Protected Areas). Aims to establish necessary protected areas and their development within a protected area system.
Área Protegida (Protected Area)
An area designated to be protected due to its natural characteristics, by the State and/or private organizations.
Objetivos de las Áreas Protegidas Naturales (Objectives of Natural Protected Areas)
Aims to ensure ecological processes, conserve genetic diversity, and achieve sustainable use of species and ecosystems.
Objetivo del SIGAP (Objective of SIGAP)
To establish necessary protected areas for public use and social interest, integrating actions of land management and sustainable tourism development.
Tipos de Manejo de Áreas Protegidas (Protected Area Management Types)
Six categories exist including Parque Nacional, Reserva Biológica, Biotopo Protegido, Reserva Forestal Protectora de Manantiales, Reserva Natural Privada, and Reserva de Biosfera.
Áreas de Manejo (Management Areas)
Mechanisms to classify a protected area based on management guidelines to fulfill objectives, ranging from strict conservation to sustainable development.
Parque Nacional (National Park)
A protected area category with a legal status obligating the protection and conservation of its flora and fauna.
Reserva Biológica (Biological Reserve)
An area that is especially protected because of its natural value, aimed at the preservation of its native environment.
Refugio de Vida Silvestre (Wildlife Refuge)
Relatively large areas that may have suffered human alterations but still retain a good sample of the natural landscape, allowing sustainable productive activities.
Reserva Hídrica y Forestal (Water and Forest Reserve)
Relatively large areas that conserve important forests and water sources.
Áreas de Usos Múltiples (Multiple Use Areas)
Relatively large areas that may have suffered human alterations but still conserve a good sample of the natural landscape, allowing sustainable productive activities.
Biotopo
Territory or living space with suitable environmental conditions for a specific community of living beings to develop.
Reservas de la Biósfera (Biosphere Reserves)
Areas that aim to reconcile human mentality and the use of natural resources, embodying the concept of sustainable development and representing different habitats.
Zona de Veda Definitiva (Definite Closure Zone)
All the volcanic cones of the country, from the crater to the slopes of 30 degrees as a limit. No debris removal for agricultural purposes or forest exploitation activities are allowed.
Monumentos Naturales (Natural Monuments)
A natural element of unique landscape, geological, historical, or other value, which requires special protection.
Rutas y Vías Escénicas (Scenic Routes and Roads)
Routes promoted as tourist destinations, passing through spectacular landscapes, evoking historical events, or bringing us closer to natural monuments and unique cultures.
Parque Regional Municipal (Municipal Regional Park)
Areas where protection measures are needed to conserve natural features, with emphasis on their use for educational and recreational purposes, owned and administered by the municipality.
Reserva Natural Privada (Private Natural Reserve)
Areas owned by individuals or legal entities, voluntarily destined for conservation, contributing to the formation of biological corridors.
