Extending the franchise

Gave the vote to middle class men however most working class men still could not vote as it required property

1832 Great Reform Act

Women who were married, owned property, were graduates, and aged over 30 were given the vote and all men over the age of 21

1918 Representation of the People Act

Extended the suffrage to all women

1928 Representation of the People Act

Extended the suffrage to all people over 18 as attitude towards adulthood had changed

1969 Representation of the People Act

Used peaceful methods and gathered support via petitions. They were successful in getting bills into Parliament but none were made into law

Suffragists

Used violent methods like setting fire to buildings, chaining themselves to railings and attacking politicians. The WPSU is an example of one of the groups and members were arrested for their violent actions. Some even went on hunger strike in prison and were force fed.
