What type of growth increases bone length?
Interstitial growth.
Where does interstitial growth occur?
At the epiphyseal plate.
What happens on the epiphyseal side of the growth plate?
Chondrocytes divide and produce new hyaline cartilage.
What is chondrocyte proliferation?
Rapid division of chondrocytes by mitosis.
How does new cartilage increase bone length?
It pushes the epiphysis away from the diaphysis.
What happens on the diaphyseal side of the growth plate?
Older cartilage is destroyed and replaced by bone.
What happens to older chondrocytes on the diaphyseal side?
They enlarge, the matrix calcifies, and the cells die.
Which cells replace the old cartilage with bone?
Osteoblasts.
What happens when cartilage production equals cartilage replacement?
The bone continues to increase in length.
What happens when the epiphyseal plate is completely replaced by bone?
It becomes an epiphyseal line and longitudinal growth stops.
