Chemistry - The Study of matter
its properties
Matter - Anything that has mass and takes up space
Pure Chemistry - Research that is conducted to learn the existing principles of Chemistry
Applied Chemistry - Research that is conducted to solve a problem
and that can lead to the development of new products
Organic Chemistry - The branch of chemistry that focuses on compounds containing Carbon
Inorganic Chemistry - The branch of chemistry that focuses on compounds that do NOT contain carbon
Biochemistry - The branch of Chemistry that studies the chemicals and processes that occur in living things.
Analytical Chemistry - The branch of chemistry that focuses on the determination of the chemical makeup of materials (Identifying and measuring the makeup of something)
Physical Chemistry - The branch of chemistry that focuses on the energy
rates
Physical Property - A Characteristic that can be observed or measured without changing the Substance's identity.
Extensive Physical Property - A property that depends on the amount of matter
Intensive Physical Property - A property that is not dependent on the amount of matter
Chemical Property - A Characteristic of a material that describes its reaction potential. It can only be observed during a chemical reaction.
Physical Change - A process that results in different properties being observed
but the identity of the matter stays the same.
Chemical Change - A process that results in different properties being observed because the identity of the matter does change.
what are the three most common States of matter - The three most Common States of matter are gas
liquid
Mixture - A physical blend of materials with no definite proportions
Solution - A homogeneous mixture
Chemical Equation - Reactants are on the left of a chemical equation
Products are on the right
Element - A pure substance that cannot be broken down into smaller components by ordinary chemical means.
Compound - A pure substance formed when two or more elements in fixed proportions are Chemically bonded
Chemical Symbol - An abbreviation used to represent an element
Chemical Formula - Representations of compounds
Conversion Factor - A ratio (in the form of a fraction) of equivalent measurements used to convert from one unit to another
whats distillation - Separation technique that purifies liquids by selectively heating a mixture to vaporize its components
then cooling the vapor to condense it back into a liquid
Whats the ways a mixture can be separated - By hand
distillation
