FRO

First Responder Organization, defined by Texas DSHS as an EMS organization that responds to emergency calls and administers care but does not transport the patient.

Active Status (Undergraduate)

The status of undergraduate providers who are on the duty schedule for a minimum of $2$ full ($12$ hour) shifts per month and not on leave or suspension.

Assessment Center

A testing process for InCharge applicants administered by the EMS Director, InCharges, and alumni to select InCharge Trainees.

Leave of Absence (LOA)

A period, typically granted in $30$ day increments, when personnel are removed from the duty schedule and do not respond to calls or initiate care.

Shift Change

The transition between crews occurring daily at $0800$ and $2000$.

Class B Uniform

A dress uniform composed of a black uniform shirt with a REMS patch on the left sleeve and DSHS certification patch on the right, black EMS pants, and a black belt.

Protected Health Information (PHI)

Individually identifiable health information relating to past, present, or future physical or mental health, provision of care, or payment for health care.

Probation

A disciplinary period of between $14$ and $60$ days during which a member is observed and assigned a management plan with completion goals.

Suspension

A period of at least $14$ days where an EMS member is prohibited from participating in any REMS functions, including duty shifts, meetings, and training.

Administrative Demotion

The removal of InCharge or coordinator/assistant status.

Termination

The permanent removal of an individual from REMS, requiring the return of all property and ending the practice of medicine under the REMS Medical Director.

EHS&LO

Rice University Environmental Health, Safety, and Laboratory Operations; specialty-trained responders for hazardous materials, chemical incidents, and fires.

Rice Counseling Center

A campus resource staffed by psychologists and counselors for patients with behavioral emergencies or emotional instability.

emsCharts

The electronic system used by REMS to complete patient care reports after a call.

Incident Report

A report filed if there are disagreements about patient care or if an injury or accident occurs to a provider during a shift.

Special Events Pay Rate

The standard pay for providers which is $\$21/hour$ with a $3-hour$ minimum.

Minor Trauma Patient (Special Events)

A criteria for treating and releasing at events where the patient is an ambulatory adult with a simple isolated injury, like a request for a band-aid or ice pack.

Emergency Button

A safety feature on the radio that, when pressed, overrides all other traffic for $10$ seconds to broadcast a life-threatening emergency.

PAD Sites

Public Access Defibrillator sites; REMS maintains $71$ of these across campus buildings.

Texas EMS Wristband

A numbered band placed on all patients being transported by ambulance or involved in a Multi-Patient Event/Mass Casualty Incident.

Pulsara

A mobile application used to log patient demographics, triage information, and vital signs, which can then be imported into emsCharts.
