What does federate mean?
The word "Federate" means to unite separate states, organizations, or groups into a single entity under a central authority, while allowing individual parts to retain some degree of local autonomy. The word can function as a verb (the act of joining) or an adjective (the state of being allied). For CWRU, in short, two institutions came together (or merged) to form one. We honor both with the name of the university which is why it is important to always say Case Western Reserve University or CWRU.
