Tissues
groups of similar cells specialized to perform a specific function; primary tissue types are epithelial, connective, muscle, and nervous tissues
Apical surface
free (unattached) surface or edge; exposed to the body's exterior or to the cavity of an internal organ
epithelium
the lining, covering, and glandular tissue of the body
Basement membrane
a thin layer of extracellular material to which epithelial cells are attached in mucosa surfaces
Simple epithelium
one layer of cells
Stratified epithelium
more than one cell layer
Squamous epithelium
flat, scalelike cells; fit closely together like floor tiles
Serous membrane/ serosa
epithelial membrane that lines a cavity without an opening to the outside of the body
Simple cuboidal epithelium
one layer of cuboidal cells resting on a basement membrane; common in glands and their ducts
Simple columnar epithelium
a single layer of tall cells that fit closely together
Goblet cells
individual cells that produce mucus
mucosae/mucous membrane
epithelial membranes that line body cavities open to the body exterior
Pseudostratified columnar epithelium
nuclei appear at different heights which gives the false impression that it is stratified
Stratified squamous epithelium
several layers of squamous cells
Stratified squamous epithelium
typically has just two cell layers with the surface cells being cuboidal shape
Stratified columnar epithelium
columnar cells, but its base cells vary in size and shape
Transitional epithelium
highly modified, stratified squamous epithelium; forms the lining of unirany organs
Gland
one or more cells that make and secrete a particular product
Secretion
the product from a gland; typically contains protein molecules in an aqueous (water-based) fluid
endocrine glands
lose their connection to the surface, ductless glands; hormones
Exocrine glands
retain ducts to the epithelial surface; sweat, oil glands, liver, and pancreas
Connective tissue
connects body parts
Extracellular matrix
nonliving material in connective tissue consisting of ground substance and fibers that separate the living cells
