Ecological adaptation
The processes by which organisms adjust to their environment to enhance their survival and reproduction, involving changes in physical structure, behavior, or physiological processes.
Structural Adaptations
Physical characteristics that enhance an organism's ability to survive in its environment, such as camouflage and beak shapes.
Camouflage
A structural adaptation where an organism, such as a chameleon or Arctic fox, changes color to blend into its surroundings to avoid predators or ambush prey.
Darwin's finches
A group of birds that exhibit various beak shapes adapted for different diets like seeds, insects, or nectar, allowing them to exploit different ecological niches.
Behavioral Adaptations
Actions or behaviors developed by organisms that aid in survival, such as migration patterns and hibernation.
Migration Patterns
A behavioral adaptation where bird species travel thousands of miles to find food and favorable breeding conditions to avoid harsh climates.
Hibernation
A state entered by animals like bears during winter months to conserve energy when food is scarce.
Physiological Adaptations
Internal body processes that help organisms cope with environmental stresses, such as water conservation and thermoregulation.
Water Conservation
A physiological adaptation in desert animals like camels that allows them to minimize water loss and store water efficiently.
Thermoregulation
Internal processes, such as frogs changing skin color in response to temperature, that help organisms regulate their body heat.
Arctic Fox
A species adapted to cold climates with thick fur for insulation and a seasonal color change from brown to white for camouflage against snow.
