Radio Waves

Longest wavelengths with the lowest energy. Used for television, radio broadcasts, and cell phones

Microwaves

Shorter than radio waves. Used for cooking food and satellite communications

Infrared (IR)

Thermal radiation felt as heat (used in remote controls, garage doors, & red light therapy)

Visible Light

The tiny portion of the spectrum human eyes can see, ranging from red (longer wavelengths) to violet (shorter wavelengths)

Ultraviolet (UV)

Higher frequency than visible light. Comes from the Sun and causes sunburn, but is also used for sterilization (process that completely removes, kills, or deactivates all forms of microorganisms)

X-Rays

High-energy waves that penetrate soft tissue

Gamma Rays

Shortest wavelengths and highest energy. Released by radioactive materials and used in advanced cancer treatments
