“Palace” Complex at Knossos, Crete, c. 1700-1375 BCE
-Excavated sometime ago, some parts were reconstructed, others werent
-Complex of rooms, that were believed to be the "palace" of the king
-They found the palace of Minos, potentially
-Rooms were attached so organized, people thought it was the palace
-Built of stone, open to outdoors, didnt need much protection because they were in an island
-The palace at Knossos is the largest on Crete. It was the home of King Minos. According to the myth, Theseus battled the bull-man Minotaur here. King’s daughter, Ariadne, gave Theseus a spindle of thread to mark his way out through the labyrinth. The Knossos palace is a rambling structure built against the upper slopes and across the top of a low hill. (Kleiner, 84-85)
Landscape (“Spring Fresco”), from Cyclades Islands, before 1630 BCE
-From originally a small room w out windows
-Basically a figurative window to the outdoors even though there was no actual windows
The “Flotilla Fresco”, from Thera, c. 1650 BCE
-From the island of thera
-Just one part of a larger wall fragment of a fresco from a room on the island of thera
-Not super tall, long strips of a fresco (wet, had to paint quickly)
-The fresco was created for the purpose of a house on the island and the house would have had connected rooms
-The image we see is taken from real life, from their own daily lives(common)
-Celebratory image of a festival of boats on the sea, people are shown in many boats, sitting while others row, travelling from one island to another
-We know its the aegean because its in thera (real location) and includes view of the sea, one of the islands (cause of the rocky terrain the mountainous lands, jagged coastline)
-Rich colors
-Shows their buildings and their ppl
-Floatilla is a group of boats
-There is a person who steers it, then the ppl who are seated (well to do people) and can sit in the boat
-People on the boats are also enjoying the festival, and dolphins are swimming alongside the boats, normal natural occurence
-Rendering is 2D instead of showing a recession, people are shown on a planar surface
-Rendered it this way because of the layouts, depicting it in "Vertical Perspective"
-More of a commutal society
-Landscape full of people happily interacting, inviting, life giving, celebrating it
-Some people are depicted compositely or fully profiled
