what is osmoregulation?
active process by which organisms maintain a stable internal balance of water and dissolved solutes relative to their surrounding environment
What is osmosis?
The natural movement of water through a semipermeable membrane from areas of low solute concentration to high solute concentration
what is an osmoconformer?
marine organisms that match their internal water and salt concentration to the external environment
what is an osmoreceptor?
organism that maintains a stable internal concentration of water and salts regardless of its external environment
what is a hypertonic solution?
a solution with a higher solute concentration than the inside of the cell. water leaves cell to dilute surroundings. causes cells to shrivel and shrink.
what is a hypotonic solution?
solution with lower solute concentration than inside of the cell. water rushes into cell causing cells to swell and potentially burst.
what is an isotonic solution?
solution with exact same solute concentration of inside of cell. water moves in and out of cell and same rate. cell remains stable.
