Force

a push or pull upon an object resulting from the object's interaction with another object

Net Force

the overall force acting on an object when all of the forces acting on it are combined

Newton's First Law of Motion

a scientific law stating that objects at rest remain at rest, and objects in motion remain in motion with the same velocity, unless acted upon by an unbalanced force

Inertia

the tendency of an object to resist changes in its velocity or resist changes to acceleration

Newton's Second Law of Motion

a scientific law stating that the acceleration of an object increases with increased force and decreases with increased mass

Centripetal Force

any force that keeps an object moving in a circle

Newton's Third Law of Motion

a scientific law stating that every time one object exerts a force on another object, the second object exerts a force that is equal in size and opposite in direction back on the first object

Contact Forces

a force generated by a push or pull. these include frictional, tension, normal, air resistance, applied, and spring forces

Frictional Force

the result of two surfaces being pressed together closely, causing attractive forces between molecules of different surfaces. friction occurs in the opposite direction of the object's motion

Static Friction

the result of when the surfaces of two objects are at rest relative to one another and a force exists on one of the objects to set it into motion relative to the other object

Sliding Friction

the result of an object sliding across a surface

Air Resistance Force

a special type of frictional force that acts upon objects as they travel through the air

Tension Force

the force that is transmitted through a string, rope, cable or wire when it is pulled tight by forces acting from opposite ends

Normal Force

the support force exerted upon an object that is in contact with another stable object
