Litotes
an understatement that states the opposite
ex. “im not as young as i used to be” = im old
Metaphor
comparison of two things, often unrelated
Dead Metaphor
overused to the point where it is no longer a metaphor
ex. the arms and legs of a chair
Extended Metaphor
metaphor that is used throughout a paragraph/passage
Mixed Metaphor
two metaphors are jumbled together, often illogically
ex. “we will burn that bridge when we come to it”
Metonymy
when you replace one word with another that is related to it
ex. the king the CROWN
