Growth
Quantitative increase in size, mass, and dimension of the body.
Development
Qualitative process involving maturation, differentiation, and functional specialization of tissues and organs.
Primary dentition
Dental stage occurring from 0-6 years of age, characterized by 20 primary teeth and common physiologic spacing (primate spaces).
Early mixed dentition
Phase of mixed dentition from 6-8 years of age involving the eruption of 1st permanent molars, permanent central incisors, and permanent lateral incisors.
Intertransitional period
Phase of mixed dentition from 8-10 years of age that is relatively stable with few eruption changes while the jaws continue to grow.
Late mixed dentition
Phase of mixed dentition from 10-12 years of age involving the eruption of permanent canines, 1st and 2nd premolars, and 2nd permanent molars near the end of the stage.
Ugly duckling stage
Temporary spacing of maxillary incisors that is usually a normal developmental phase during mixed dentition.
Permanent dentition
Dental stage occurring at 12 years and older where 28 permanent teeth are present before third molars erupt.
Craniofacial Growth
Process by which the bones of the skull (cranium) and face (facial skeleton) increase in size, change in shape, and mature from infancy to adulthood.
Cranium
Part of the craniofacial complex that protects the brain, grows rapidly during the first few years of life, and completes most growth by 6-7 years of age.
Cranial Base
Structure that forms the foundation of the facial skeleton, grows through cartilage, and influences the position of the maxilla and mandible.
Maxilla
Facial bone that develops by intramembranous ossification, grows at the sutures, and moves downward and forward because of bone deposition and remodeling.
Mandible
Jaw bone that develops by intramembranous ossification, except for the condyle which grows through cartilage (endochondral ossification), and grows forward and downward.
Bone deposition
Formation of new bone by osteoblasts.
Bone resorption
Removal of bone by osteoclasts.
Bone remodeling
Simultaneous deposition and resorption that changes the shape and position of bones.
Bone displacement
Movement of bones as they grow and surrounding structures enlarge.
Eruption pattern
The normal sequence, timing, and path by which teeth emerge from the alveolar bone into the oral cavity and reach their functional position in the dental arch.
Eruption path
The trajectory along which teeth should erupt vertically into their proper position within the dental arch.
Delayed eruption
A condition where a tooth erupts significantly later than expected.
Ectopic eruption
A condition where a tooth erupts in an abnormal position.
Impacted tooth
A tooth that fails to erupt because it is blocked by bone, soft tissue, or another tooth.
Premature eruption
A condition where a tooth erupts earlier than the expected age.
