Geography - Definition

The study of the physical features of the earth and of the human activity on the earth.

Location - 5 Themes of Geography

Absolute Location (exact latitude and longitude, found w/ GPS) Relative Location (ex. The Great Wall of China is NEAR Beijing.

Place - 5 Themes of Geography

Description of a location. Includes characteristics. Essentially “What’s it like there?”

Human Environment Interaction (HEI) - 5 Themes of Geography

Explains how people effect/alter the environment vice versa. (ex. People built the beaver dam.)

Movement - 5 Themes of Geography

Explains how ideas, people and animals move from one place to another influencing cultures, economies, and environments. (ex. spread of religions)

Region - 5 Themes of Geography

Includes a group of places that have common characteristics. It can be as big as a continent such as North America or can be as small as a neighbourhood. Includes political and physical regions.

Longitude

• Runs North to South

• Includes the Prime Meridian

Latitude

• Remembered as a “Ladder”

• Runs East to West

• Includes the Equator.

Latitude + Longitude

• A coordinate system used in geography to determine the precise location of points on the Earth's surface.

• Latitude measures distances north or south of the Equator, while longitude measures distances east or west of the Prime Meridian.

• Together, they create a grid system that allows for accurate mapping and navigation.

• When writing the coordinates be sure to always put latitude first then longitude.
