Cartographic Principles
The science of making maps and one of the contributing disciplines to GIS.
Map Definition
A spatial representation of the environment and all maps are abstractions of real-world phenomena.
Map Objective
The message the mapmaker wants to convey. The audience who will use the map. The available data. The use of graphic software. The final format.
Symbology
The art of expression, using graphics and text to convey meaning.
Scale
The representation of map figures to their on the ground equivalents.
Legend
Putting meaning to symbols.
Locational Inset
A map that shows a larger area in context to a smaller area, also known as a locator map or a small-scale map.
Neatline
A border that surrounds a map figure, usually a line that adds a sense of closure to a map.
Thematic Maps
Use colors, shades, or symbols to describe spatial variation of one or more landscape features.
Choropleth maps
The most common type of thematic map
Design Loop
Develop map, get feedback, edit map, map completed.
Cartographer Responsibility
Be Accurate, Be Honest, Give Credit to Sources, Design Clearly, Consider the Audience, Make Maps Accessible, Update Regularly.
