What is pulmonary artery
Only artery that carries deoxygenated blood
Right p.a - carries deoxygenated blood to right lung
Left p.a - carries deoxygenated blood to left lung
What is carotid arteries
2 main blood vessels that carry oxygenated blood to face neck and brain
Aorta
Carries oxygenated blood around body
Semi lunar valves and what are the 2 types
Seperate arteries
Prevents backflow to ventricles
Pulmonary valve (right)
Separates pulmonary artery and right ventricle
Aortic valve (Left)
Separates aorta from left ventricle
What is tendinous chords
Makes sure valve dont turn inside out by ventricle contraction
What is bicuspid valves and how many flaps does it have
Left atrioventricular valve (oxygenated)
Only has 2 flaps
Seperate chambers (atrium + ventricles)
Prevent blood flowing back into atria during ventricular contraction
Septum
Thick wall of tissue that divides the right and left sides of the heart
(Atrial septum == seperate the atria)
(Ventricular septum = separates ventricles)
What are the 2 types of vena cavas and roles
Superior vena cava
carries deoxygentaed blood from upper part of body to heart
Inferior vena cava
carries deoxygenated blood from lower parts of body
Pulmonary veins
LEFT P.V = Carry oxygenated blood from the lungs on left side
RIGHT P.V = carry o.b from lungs on right side

3 cuspid valves

Seperates right atria to right ventricle
What does d.b enter through
Deoxygenated blood enters through the vena cavas
What happens when d.b enters the right atria
Right atrium fills (atria walls = thin) - pressure - opens up tricuspid valves
D.blood fills ventricle and once atrium ventricle is filled = atrium contracts = forces blood into ventricle
Ventricle contracts = tricuspid valves shut
Ventricle fully contracts - through semi lunar valves - through pulmonary artery to lungs
What is the path oxygenated blood takes
Enters left atrium from pulmonary vein
Pressure increases - bicuspid valve open between left atrium + left ventricle - fills with. Blood
Atrium full + ventricle full = atrium contracts - 0.blood in ventricle
Left ventricle contracts - through semi lunar valves - out aorta + around body - as ventricle contracts the bicuspid valves close
Why are muscular walls thicker on left than the right
Lungs are smaller than rest of the body
Right side pumps relatively short distance
Only overcomes resistance of pulmonary circulation
The left side produces more force to overcome resistance of aorta and arterial systems of whole body and move blood under pressure consistently
Why do most people have small gaps in heart
Septum isn’t fully developed after birth
(Blood is oxygenated in placenta not unusual so blood can mix freely)
Days after birth the gap closes to ensure blood is separating kept
Any gap after first few weeks = hole in heart
Most people have small gaps but not harmful until it gets bigger

Stethoscope
