The Laboratory Information System (LIS)

An electronic system used for entering and retrieving patient data, such as lab tests, orders, patient demographics, tracking test order times, and results.

Common uses are placing and retrieving test orders, entering and retrieving results, printing specimen labels, and generating reports.

This improves the time between sample collection and result reporting.

LIS Specimen Labels

Labels from LIS are used for accurate identification.

A correct barcode match confirms the label belongs to patient. It may also display additional details, such as collection tubes and correct order of draw. It may auto record date, time, and technician ID for collection.

If patient’s name/DOB does not match requisition forms, phlebotomists must solve issue in LIS.

CPT (Current Procedural Terminology) Codes

Every medical service/procedure is assigned a CPT code. Each code has a 5-digit numerical format (venipuncture is 364150).

Category 1: Common procedures and services

Category 2: Supplemental codes for performance measurement and tracking

Category 3: Temporary codes for emerging technologies and experimental procedures

ICD-10 (International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision) Codes

Assigned ICD-10 codes to patient’s diagnosis or condition. A lab order must have a ICD-10 code (from requisition form) to be entered into LIS. Each code is alphanumeric and has 3-7 characters, first one always being a letter, followed by numbers and other characters as needed.

ICD-10-CM (Clinical Modification): Used for diagnoses

ICD-10-PCS (Procedure Coding System): Used for inpatient hospital procedures.
