Connective Tissue
The most abundant tissue type in the human body, providing structural binding, support, protection, insulation, fuel conservation, and transportation.
Embryonic Mesenchyme
The pliable embryonic tissue packed with pluripotent stem cells from which all connective tissues arise in vitro.
Extracellular Matrix (ECM)
The non-cellular component of connective tissue surrounding cells, composed collectively of ground substance and fibers.
Connective Tissue Proper
A major class of connective tissue characterized by a standardized form of cells, fibers, and ground substance, divided into loose and dense subcategories.
Ground Substance
An interstitial fluid component of the extracellular matrix that occupies space between cells and provides structural variability to different connective tissues.
Collagen Fibers
Thick, durable protein fibers within the extracellular matrix that provide high tensile strength and prevent tissues from tearing under stress.
Elastic Fibers
Extracellular matrix fibers composed of elastin protein that grant tissues the ability to stretch and recoil back to their original shape.
Reticular Fibers
Thin, branching collagenous fibers that form a net-like structural framework within organs.
Stroma
A net-like fiber network formed by reticular fibers that physically supports developing blood cells in organs such as the spleen and lymph nodes.
-blast
A cell name suffix denoting an immature builder cell that secretes ground substance and constructs fibers in connective tissues.
-cyte
A cell name suffix denoting a mature cell that monitors, maintains, and restores the surrounding extracellular matrix.
Fibroblast
The primary, unspecialized builder cell of connective tissue proper that synthesizes extracellular fibers and ground substance.
Osteoblast
A bone-building cell that secretes soft osteoid matrix and subsequently calcifies it into hard bone matrix.
Adipocyte
A specialized connective tissue cell designed for lipid storage, physical shock absorption, and thermal insulation.
Mast Cell
A protective tissue cell that detects foreign microorganisms and triggers a localized inflammatory response by releasing chemical messengers.
Heparin
An anticoagulant chemical secreted by mast cells that thins the blood to enhance localized circulation following injury.
Histamine
A chemical mediator released by mast cells that dilates capillary vessels and increases permeability to deliver immune fluid to tissues.
Macrophage
A large phagocytic cell capable of engulfing, digesting, and destroying foreign substances, pathogens, and cellular debris.
Loose Connective Tissue
A subcategory of connective tissue proper (including areolar, adipose, and reticular) characterized by sparsely distributed fibers and abundant ground substance.
Areolar Connective Tissue
The most widely distributed connective tissue in the human body, situated beneath epithelial layers to facilitate efficient nutrient diffusion.
Hypertrophy
The process by which individual cells expand in size rather than number, such as adipocytes enlarging during post-puberty weight gain.
White Fat
The primary adult form of adipose tissue specialized in long-term energy storage, shock cushioning, and insulation.
Brown Fat
A mitochondria-rich form of adipose tissue abundant in infants that actively consumes nutrients to generate metabolic heat.
Dense Regular Connective Tissue
A poorly vascularized tissue packed with parallel collagen fibers running in a single direction to resist unidirectional tension (e.g., tendons and ligaments).
Aponeurosis
A broad, sheet-like tendon composed of dense regular connective tissue that attaches muscle to muscle.
Dense Irregular Connective Tissue
A vascularized tissue containing interwoven collagen fibers oriented in multiple directions, permitting multidirectional tension resistance (e.g., dermis of skin).
Elastic Connective Tissue
A dense connective tissue containing abundant elastic fibers that accommodates high pressure stretch and recoil, found in large blood vessel walls.
Lacunae
Small fluid-filled cavities within cartilage or bone matrix that entrap mature chondrocytes or osteocytes.
Perichondrium
A vascular envelope of dense irregular connective tissue surrounding cartilage that supplies nutrients and supplies chondroblasts for growth.
Hyaline Cartilage
The most abundant cartilage type, containing compressive sugar-protein structures; found in the nose, articular bone ends, costal ribs, and tracheal rings.
Elastic Cartilage
A rare, highly flexible cartilage containing dense elastic fibers, located exclusively in the external ear and the epiglottis.
Epiglottis
An elastic cartilage structure that folds down over the top of the trachea during swallowing to direct food down the esophagus.
Fibrocartilage
A durable, shock-absorbing cartilage filled with thick collagen fibers, restricted to intervertebral discs, the knee meniscus, and the pubic symphysis.
Osseous Tissue
The anatomical term for bone tissue, existing as dense compact bone or porous spongy bone to provide internal protection and leverage.
Yellow Bone Marrow
A vascularized tissue inside long bone cavities composed largely of stored triglycerides (fat).
Blood
An atypical, fluid connective tissue consisting of formed elements (erythrocytes, leukocytes, platelets) suspended in a liquid plasma matrix.
