The design argument
:The design argument states that the universe is too complex, purposeful and regular to be a random act that happened by chance.
:The amount of design in the world suggests that someone designed it.
Name the 5 'steps' in the design argument that proves God's existence
1. Anything that has been designed has a designer.
2. There is evidence the world has been designed.
3. If the world has been designed, then it must have a designer.
4. The only possible designer of something as complex as the world is God.
5. Therefore, the appearance of design proves God's existence.
Theist
A person who believes in God.
Atheist
A person who believes that there is no God.
Agnostic
A person who thinks there is not enough evidence to believe in God.
Newtons evidence to support the design argument
Newton argued that the fact we have individual patterns on our thumbs is evidence that God has planned each human separately - he thought this was good evidence of design.
Tennant: Anthropic principle
If key scientific concepts, such as gravity, had been a tiny bit different, then life would not exist, Therefore, the universe has been designed.
Bible extract that supports the design argument
Genesis 1: 1 -2
'In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.'
Scientific evidence that supports the design argument
The Earth is uniquely placed in the solar system so that it can support life - not too close to the sun that we burn up, not too far from the sun that we freeze.
Scientific evidence that contradicts the design argument
The theory of evolution, put forward by Charles Darwin, shows how species may have developed without reference to a designer God. SPECIES ADAPTED.
