Conocer means to know or to be familiar with a person, place, or thing (not facts — that’s saber).
Conozco a María. → I know María.
Conocemos Londres. → We know / are familiar with London.
In pretérito, conocer = “met (for the first time)”
Lo conocí ayer. → I met him yesterday.
In imperfecto, conocer = “knew / was familiar with”
Conocía a Ana desde hacía años. → I had known Ana for years.
