Oogenesis
The complete process of the production of ova (mature eggs).
Ovum
Singular form of ova; a mature egg.
Genetic Recombination
The process that increases genetic variation during oogenesis.
Haploid Cell
A cell containing one set of chromosomes, produced through reduction division in oogenesis.
Primordial Germ Cells (PGC)
The embryonic cells that will give rise to gametes.
Meiotic Arrest
The stage where oocytes are halted in their development before completing meiosis.
Cumulus Cells
Cells that surround the oocyte and play a role in follicle development.
Zona Pellucida
The egg coat developed by larger oocytes, composed of glycoproteins.
Atresia
The process of degeneration of oocytes that do not mature.
LH Surge
The surge in luteinizing hormone that triggers ovulation and meiotic resumption.
