PIDD (Primary immune deficiency diseases)

inherited genetic mutations. over 150 different kinds. Lack of functioning B cells.

Acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS)

Pathogenic destruction of helper T cells. Caused by a retrovirus (HIV)

Purpose of the lymphatic system

1.) drain extracellular tissues of leaky fluid

2.) to provide a place for naive cells to be trained

Lymph (parts)

made of water and protein

Lymphatic vessels (parts)

gather lymph and return to it to veins (always toward the heart)

Nodes (parts)

training center for lymphocytes. Also a removal point for pathogens

Spleen (parts)

removal of old and broken RBC's. Also a place for pathogenic removal by WBC's and a hangout for B cells.

Splenomegaly (lymphatic disorders)

swollen spleen due to infection

Tonsilitis (lymphatic disorders)

swollen tonsils due to infection (tonsils are made of lymphatic tissue)

Lymphedema

blockage of lymph vessels or nodes

Filariasis (Elephantiasis)

Tropical parasitic worms invade the lymph nodes and block them

Lymphomas

lymph node cancer
