Vacuole
A membrane-bound organelle inside cells that primarily functions to store water, nutrients, and waste products while helping maintain cell shape and pressure.
Tonoplast
The single membrane that surrounds a vacuole inside the cell.
Cell Sap
The fluid contained inside a vacuole surrounded by the tonoplast.
Storage (Vacuole Function)
The function of vacuoles to hold vital materials including water, sugars, minerals, proteins, and ions.
Turgor Pressure (in Plants)
The process where the large central vacuole fills with water and pushes against the cell wall, keeping plant cells rigid and preventing the plant from wilting.
Waste Management (Vacuole Function)
The function of vacuoles where they isolate harmful toxins, excess salts, and metabolic waste from the rest of the cell.
