Skeletal Muscle
Striated muscle that is under voluntary control, attached to bones, and responsible for body movement.
Cardiac Muscle
Striated, involuntary muscle found in the heart, responsible for pumping blood.
Smooth Muscle
Non-striated, involuntary muscle found in the walls of hollow organs, responsible for moving substances through the body.
Striations
The alternating light and dark bands seen in skeletal and cardiac muscle due to the arrangement of actin and myosin.
Tendons
Connective tissue that attaches skeletal muscles to bones.
Endomysium
A delicate connective tissue sheath that surrounds each muscle fiber.
Perimysium
A coarser fibrous membrane that wraps several muscle fibers into a bundle called a fascicle.
Epimysium
A tough overcoat of connective tissue that covers the entire muscle.
Satellite Cells
Muscle stem cells responsible for the division and production of new muscle cells.
Sarcomeres
The structural units of a muscle fiber, consisting of actin and myosin filaments, that contract to facilitate muscle movement.
