Define Momentum
The "quantity" of motion, or the product of mass and velocity.
Momentum equation
P(momentum) = M(ass) * V(elocity)
Si unit for momentum
Kg M/s
Momentum is always the same as what?
The direction as velocity.
What else is momentum and impulse known as?
A vector.
The harder for an object to stop, the more ? it has.
Momentum
Impulse
That which is given to an object that changes in it's momentum AKA "Change in Momentum."
Impulse equation
Delta P = F(orce) * T(ime)
Impulse Si unit
N*S
Making something move with a lot of ? , you use a lot of ? .
Momentum/Force
What do you do when you want to get an object moving with a lot of momentum?
-Apply as large force as possible for as long as possible
-Apply impulse in same direction as the current momentum.
What should you do to get rid of momentum?
Apply impulse in the opposite direction.
What relationship do impulse and momentum share?
Velocity and acceleration.
What happens if impulse and momentum are in the opposite direction?
Momentum will decrease.
If impulse and momentum are in the same direction...
momentum will increase
When diving in to water what happens to force and time?
You have more time and less force.
When falling down towards rocks what happens to force and time?
You are given less time and more force.
Shortness of time can do what to you?
Kill you because the force is bigger.
Define collision.
When any 2 objects come together.
Define elastic collision.
When objects rebound with no permanent deformation and little energy is converted during the collisions.
Define inelastic collision.
Opposite of an elastic, when objects become permanently deformed and or entangled and a large amount of energy is converted during the collision.
What is the type of energy presented before a collision?
Kinetic energy; the energy of the motion of one or both of the objects.
What are you going to convert kinetic energy during a collision?
-KE of other objects
-Elastic
-Sound energy (mechanical)
-Gravitational potential
-KE of individual parts of an object (crumbling)
Are collisions 100% perfect elastic or inelastic?
No.
How much (evidence) percentage do you need to decide which collision occurred?
51%
AUTOMOBILE SAFETY: Very important lesson...
All of these safety features and devices have been designed with a 40 MPH crash in mind.
YOU ARE NEVER ? IN A CAR!
SAFE
What is the Law of conservation of momentum?
The momentum of a system will remain constant unless an external net impulse is exerted upon it.
The system when talking about collisions will include how many separate objects?
Two.
Will objects move at the same velocity? Why?
No, because of the difference in mass.
If we count two objects as our system, whatever they do to one another will not affect what?
The total momentum of the system.
Example: In a read end collision what basic things can happen?
-hit and bounce off each other
-They may hit and stick together
Example: In a head on collisions what things can happen to the objects?
-Come to a stop
-Bounce off one another and move in opposite direction
