What is histology defined as?
Histology is the study of tissues.
What are the four primary types of tissues and their main functions?
Epithelial (covering), Connective (support), Muscle (movement), and Nerve (communication/control).
What are the main characteristics of epithelial tissue?
Lines a space, consists mostly of cells with junctions, avascular, innervated, possesses polarity, and capable of fast regeneration.
What are the primary functions of epithelial tissue?
Protection, secretion, absorption, and distention.
What are the key characteristics and functions of connective tissue?
Characteristics: found everywhere, originates from mesenchyme, variable vascularity, and contains a nonliving matrix. Functions: binding and support, protection, insulation, and transport (blood).

How are epithelia classified based on layer arrangement in this diagram?
Simple epithelium consists of a single layer of cells attached to a basal surface, whereas stratified epithelium consists of multiple cell layers.

What three cell shapes are used to classify epithelial tissue, as illustrated below?
Squamous (flattened), Cuboidal (cube-like), and Columnar (tall/column-shaped).

What is a gland, and how do endocrine and exocrine glands differ?
A gland is one or more cells that makes and secretes an aqueous or oily fluid. Endocrine glands secrete internally into blood or extracellular space (e.g., hormones, steroids, proteins). Exocrine glands secrete externally onto body surfaces (e.g., mucus, sweat, oil, salivary glands) and are more numerous.
What tissue serves as the common tissue of origin for all connective tissues?
Mesenchyme.
What are the components of the extracellular matrix in connective tissue?
Ground substance (unstructured material that fills the space between cells) and fibers (collagen, elastic, or reticular).
What are the functional properties of collagen, elastic, and reticular fibers?
Collagen fibers are tough and resist longitudinal ("pulling") stress; elastic fibers are rubber-band like; reticular fibers are branched collagenous fibers that support organs and blood vessels.
What primary cell types are found in Connective tissue proper, Cartilage, Bone, and Blood?
Connective tissue proper: fibroblast. Cartilage: chondrocyte/blast. Bone: osteocyte/blast/clast. Blood: stem cells and migrating cells (RBCs and WBCs).
What is the main distinction between loose connective tissue and dense connective tissue?
Fiber concentration: loose connective tissue has less fibers per area, whereas dense connective tissue has more fibers per area.
