Organelles
structures within a cell that have a specific function
Selectively Permeable
allowing only certain materials to pass through it and not others.
Cell membrane
the selectively permeable structure that covers the contents of a cell. it determines what is able to move into and out of a cell
nucleus
it controls all of the cells activities. It contains DNA which direct the cells growth and reproduction. it is cover by a nucleus membrane
Cytoplasm
a gel like substance located throughout a cell thathelps contain and support the structure of a cell
Vacuole
a balloon like fluid filled organelle that stores water, food, wastes, and other materials
Endoplasmic Reticulum
a folded membrane that forms a system of canal like structures that transport materials to different parts of a cell
Cell wall
only occur in the cells of plants and fungi. They are much thicker and more rigid than the cell membranes of aninal cells and are made mostly of a tough material called cellulose. They provide support for the cell.
chloroplasts
enables plants to make carbohydrates through the process of photosynthesis. it is only found in plants. it contains chlorophyll
golgi body apparatus
the three primary functions of gba are the transport, sorting, and modification of both protein and lipid
ribosomes
responsible for making proteins
cell size
cells are extremely small in diameter, they usually run 1 to 5 micrometers in diameter, a smaller cell takes less energy to function
Mitochondrion
an oval shaped organelles that transforms energy for the cell. Tiny food particles are broken down to release their chemical energy for the cell to perform its activities
