Osteogenesis
The process of bone tissue formation.
Endochondral ossification
Bone develops from a template of hyaline cartilage; used to form long bones.
Intramembranous ossification
Bone develops directly from a template of fibrous connective tissue; used to form flat bones.
Appositional growth
Growth of cartilage from the outside.
Interstitial growth
Growth of cartilage from between cells.
Bone Remodeling
The process through which bone is continuously renewed and repaired.
Reasons for Bone Remodeling
Includes adjustment of strength, change in shape, and replacement of brittle osteoid.
Osteoclasts
Cells that cause bone resorption.
Acidification
A process that breaks down mineral components of bone, releasing calcium and phosphate.
Alkaline phosphatase
An enzyme produced by osteoblasts that attracts phosphate during bone formation.
