Information Security vs. Privacy

• Security was disregarded at first. Started gaining traction as networks became more common. Laws enforce standards.

• Privacy is inherently more complex: Who, what, when, where, why.

• Private information is context dependent → difficult to protect.

• Currently lack of motivation → not enforced by law & profitability / utility loss.

=> Hope that privacy follows similar path as security.

What is the idea of a Epsilon Registry?

• Despite wide-spread use, there is little understanding of optimal ε values in DP.

• Epsilon Registry = public body of knowledge about DP implementations → Guideline for others.
